Decorating the wall with cloth
Sayyidatuna Aaisha (Radhiallaahu Anha) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, ‘Verily Allah has not commanded us to cloth stone and sand.’ (Sahih Muslim vol.14 pg.312 and Sunan Abu Dawud vol.6 pg.69)
Al-Muhaddith Khaleel Ahmad Saharanpuri (RA) has commented on this tradition of hanging decorative cloth on the walls of the house is reprehensible (Makrooh) as it is a waste of money. (Bazlul Majhood vol.6 pg.69).
Decorating the wall with cloth was also disliked by some Sahaaba (Radhiallaahu Anhum), for example, Sayyiduna Abu Ayyoob al-Ansari (RA) and Sayyiduna Salmaan al-Faarisiy (RA). (Fathul Baari vol.9 pg.310 Hadith No.:5181; al-Mufhim of Imaam al-Qurtubi (ra) vol.5 pg.427)
However, it should be remembered that if one needs to curtain a window or a doorway in his house, this will be permissible based on need. (Raddul Muhtaar vol.9 pg.510-511 - Ilmiyyah; Fataawah Hindiyyah vol.1 pg.359)
